How to Develop Mobile Apps

My foray into iOS development began when a fasting app I used daily was updated. Much to my dismay, the original interface had been ruined, and required “sign up” to use the app. I did what any engineer would do: I decided to solve the problem myself!

It didn’t take long to get a functioning app on the App Store. My app took inspiration from the original design, and added features such as import/export, ability to page through previous fasts, and a slider.

Once published, I used it daily, as did family and friends. Then I started my first job out of college, and forgot about the App Store. After a while, curiosity got the better of me and I checked to see the analytics. Much to my surprise, thousands of people had downloaded the app! I felt a great sense of meaning and purpose. I had used my skills and tenacity to create something that helped others.

One day a friend of mine told me he didn’t have an iPhone, but a peculiar hunk of junk called an Android. I did some research, and found a framework that could build universally: Flutter.

Transitioning to from Swift to Flutter was tedious, but after a few weeks of effort (and a lot of Diet Coke), my app was available to both iPhone and Android users.

My fasting app has been a good reminder of how far I’ve come. I’d highly encourage other engineers to find a problem and solve it. It’ll be difficult, rewarding, and fulfilling. At the end of your journey you’ll have acquired valuable knowledge, helped others, and discovered a sense of meaning and purpose.

Have a wonderful rest of your day, and as always, cheers!
